Using Concept Mapping to Foster Critical Thinking

One of the main goals of nursing education is to promote and ensure adequate critical thinking skills in our nursing students. The first step in this process must be to define this term for students and to explain what is meant by it within nursing program and nursing course objectives. In other words, what must a student do to achieve and demonstrate critical thinking? How are course and program competencies achieved using critical thinking?
Beyond this, the next step(s) involve employing various teaching and learning strategies to ensure goal accomplishment related to critical thinking. This is a continual process using concepts such as reinforcement, layering knowledge, making associations between concepts and applying what is learned. Taking theoretical knowledge and givingit meaning through nursing actions is definitely critcal thinking in action.
Concept maps embody all of these concepts and are a fantastic method for teaching, honing and evaluating critical thinking in nursing students.
Whether you are an educator or a student, what have your experiences with concept mapping been? What have you learned?

The pathway to excellence in nursing wisdom is one all nurses travel throughout their careers. I am not even truly sure that expert status can be attained to a point where it is able to be maintained with very little effort. In reality, there are degrees of nursing wisdom and while we may achieve an expert status in one area,   it would be rare to find an individual who has achieved that rank in all areas of nursing. The constant efforts to maintain and reach ever higher nursing wisdom levels is what the nursing profession is all about. Patient populations, treatment regimens and equipment change, but nursing standards must remain high no  matter what. Inspire yourself and others to keep raising the bar in achieving nursing wisdom excellence.
